How come I am told that if I wear ribbons in my hair or bows, leggings, skirts or dresses and tights with make-up and I walk into an upper-level science class, I am told I will be looked at as “different” by my (mostly) male peers? My choice of outfits is deemed to be, too “stylish” when in fact I am hardly trying at all to be stylish???
THEN nobody says anything about a guy who walks into an upper-division science or math class, sporting the smae disgustign shirt everyday during the semester. Maybe he won’t wash his hair or take showers or something…but will wear shirts that should be thrown away, haven’t been washed in ages or have a lot of holes AND NOBODY SAYS ANYTHING ABOUT THEIR HEYGINE?
But my chocie of outfits for this field is “shocking”?
Why DO I HAVE TO MAKE AN EFFORT
WHEN GUYS ARE GIVIEN A PASS IN THIS FIELD TO NOT GIVE A FUCKING CRAP ABOUT HOW THEY LOOK?
•guy in physics “shh’s” me twice whenever I open my mouth to comment on something, or even say something to myself.
•a “friend” comes up to me while walking back from a field trip and asks me,”why do you believe in ghosts”. After I tell him that “it’s just something often part of Asian cultures”, he replies ,”well so is a lot of beliefs, like God which can’t be proven”. So basically he was just starting a conversation to just attack my beliefs. -____-
•I go up to some people I know and relieve my anxiety or try to feel better by informing yh of my day, only to be told “to stop spreading hate” by a guy, who didn’t want me discussing my bad encounters. Basically it was the equivalent of someone putting their hand on my mouth to make me be quiet. Being a girl rocks.
Sexism is far from over. It’s so easy to be a female in science
“SMASH is a state of the art Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) summer enrichment program at the UC Berkeley and Stanford campuses, and is expanding to other sites in the future. Live on campus with other high potential Black, Latino/a, Native American, Southeast Asian or Pacific Islander high school students. Be prepared for college! SMASH admitted 120 new students to participate in SMASH Academy for summer 2011 and will be admitting more in the Winter of 2012”
If SMASH isn’t a fit for you, click here for a list of other math and science-focused summer programs and their application deadlines.
The increased amount of science programmes i’m seeing specifically designed for accepting Asians only from “specific” countries…is a product of how messed up affirmative action is towards Asians. But nobody notices so whatever.. So we get programmes like this who in my book basically believe that Japanese/Korean/Chinese/Burmese/Taiwanese/Tibetan/Bhutanese/Nepalese/Indian don’t need help because there’s “too many of them in science and engineering”
Punish these mofos for incorporating confucianism’s belief in the importance of education in their culture!
These programmes should cater towards ALL minorities, not just “some”.
and again science is on the scoreboard!
